The central theme of a custom guitar can come from a number of different sources. Sometimes it's an unusual musical application or a desire for versatility, sometimes it's an inlay or personal motive. In the case of the Masai 7 named "Haze," the inspiration came in the form of a rare and exceptional piece of perfectly quarter-sawn, highly flamed purpleheart.

Having known Haze's owner, Derek Sampson of the band Lattermath for some time and accordingly his aesthetic/musical style, I knew that this would be perfect. From that starting point, the 5-piece flamed maple/purpleheart transversing neck-thru, full alder back, ebony fretboard, purple-bursted flame maple top and bright luminlay inlays were all decided upon to emphasize the visual and aural beauty of the wood.

Loaded with a set of DiMarzio humbuckers and wired for series/parallel operation in addition to a full Graph Tech Ghost acoustic system, Haze has all the tonal options to cover the wide range of sounds that Lattermath encompasses.
