This purple beast was commissioned by Joseph Spiller of Caricature (ex-Binary Code, System Divide). He was looking for a guitar that could handle the extended range and unusual tunings that he uses, while filling out the sound of what would normally be a 3-piece group. After some brainstorming we settled on an 8 string guitar with the top 4 strings doubled / octaved like a 12-string so that the rhythm guitar parts would stay tight and well-defined but both clean chords and lead melodies would be harmonized. Along with a splittable bass pickup in the neck position, handmade bone saddles for the doubled strings and a momentary killswitch, everything about this guitar was tailored for unique and interesting sounds.
The neck is a 7-piece Maple/Wenge laminate with carbon fiber reinforcements. The top wood is figured purpleheart (which has gorgeous upper-midrange response btw). The back tonewood is actually the most special part of this build, even if it looks somewhat ordinary. It is 50 year old seasoned mahogany that belonged to Joseph's grandfather; a carpenter and fine cabinet-maker. Despite the changes in ideas and options throughout the guitar's creation, the mahogany remained a constant as an homage to his grandfather's memory.
